Every athlete who really wants to race is a grand scientific experiment. An experiment of the body and the mind. We have over 20 years of experience and one thing we want to tell you is, you probably do not want to start off running this experiment on your own. Not that you can’t. You can. But you probably shouldn’t. There is much to know and just knowing where to begin with this type of experiment is critical. You don’t have to go out and learn what is already known. That is the point of having a coach.
We need to perform testing. We need to evaluate your body’s ability to accept and process nutrition under conditions that mimic YOUR specific race. If you are going to race in the heat and push a specific watt range on the bike, and you want to test a new athletic drink, you probably need to be testing that drink at that specific wattage. Unfortunately, many people do all of their experimenting under controlled conditions at non-race outputs and then under-perform on race day. We do not advocate this approach at all. We test variables under pressure and see how the body holds up. We don’t test in a vacuum or under non-race type conditions. What good is that?
Coach Lance wants you to LEARN from every training session. He wants his athletes to become empowered and confident on race day. If you want to just train mindlessly and not be engaged in the process, working with Coach Lance is not going to be for you.
Working with Coach Lance you will be continuously performing diagnostic work. You will be training within heart rate zones, watt ranges (if you have a power meter), and will always be reporting your perceived effort.
He will also be monitoring your nutritional intake to see how your body performs under specific conditions. Some athletes will have sweat rate testing completed if they struggle in hot weather. Others will have to try different sources of nutrition to avoid gastro intestinal distress. We will be working with you on all of this as you progress.
